Bernie Ockene - Class of 1992
Bernie may have been short in stature (5'4") but he stood 10 feet tall when coaching on the basketball court. He was a firm believer in the fundamentals of the game and tough, aggressive defense. His credo was never sacrifice a sound defense. His teams at Bayonne High School, Bayonne Junior College as well as at St. Peter's College lived up to that motto.
An outstanding player at John Marshall University, Bernie, who is being honored posthumously, began his coaching career at Bayonne Junior College winning 122 of 149 games. Don Kennedy quickly noticed Bernie's talents and brought him to St. Peter's College as his assistant. Ockene coached at the same time Bayonne High School from 1952-1960. While at Bayonne he won more than 260 games, capturing four county championships. He became head coach at St. Peter's in 1972 and served as the Peacock's head coach for two years.
